New autopsy of Michael Brown’s body
Justice Department orders new autopsy of Michael Brown’s body
By DeNeen L. Brown, Emily Wax-Thibodeaux and Jerry Markon August 18 at 3:42 AM
FERGUSON, Mo. — The federal government on Sunday took on an intensified role in investigating
the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black teenager, but violent unrest erupted once again
Sunday night on the streets of this St. Louis suburb — and the National Guard is on the way.
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. issued a terse statement ordering an independent autopsy of
Michael Brown by a federal medical examiner — the third autopsy of the 18-year-old. The Justice
Department took the action in response to what spokesman Brian Fallon called “the extraordinary
circumstances involved in this case” and requests from Brown’s family. Brown was killed Aug. 9 by
a white police officer, Darren Wilson.
On Sunday evening, crowds gathered again. State police Capt. Ron Johnson said the evening began
with peaceful protests that “took a very different turn after dark” as police deployed tear gas when
protesters threw Molotov cocktails and gunshots were fired at officers. Two people were injured in
shootings, and seven or eight were arrested, he said.
In a press conference at around 1:20 a.m., Johnson said unrest began at 8:25 p.m. when police
responded to reports of gunshots near Canfield, the street where Brown was killed. At 8:56,
hundreds of protesters marched toward a police staging command post in a parking lot near a
Target.
“There were multiple additional reports of Molotov cocktails being thrown, police were shot at,
makeshift barricades were set up to block police, bottles and rockets were thrown at police,”
Johnson said. “Based on these conditions, I had no alternative but to elevate the level of our
response.”

White People: Police Won’t ‘Kill Your Child’
Michael Eric Dyson Spells It Out for White People: Police Won’t ‘Kill Your Child’
"White privilege obscures from them what it means that their children can walk home and be safe."
August 17, 2014
Georgetown University Professor Michael Eric Dyson on Sunday called on President Barack Obama
to use his position to explain to white Americans that they do not continually have to fear that
police would “kill your child” as African-American parents do.
In an appearance on CBS, Dyson said that protests in Ferguson, Missouri after a white police officer
shot 18-year-old Michael Brown while he was unarmed was a symptom of a larger problem in the
nation.
“Ferguson is emblematic of those larger shifts,” he pointed out. “You’ve got white flight of a
formerly white suburb that’s now 65 percent black. You’ve got 22 percent poverty, you’ve got the
over-policing of an entire community who feel racially harassed by the police. Every 28 hours
across America a black person is killed by a security guard, a police officer or some other
executive of the state or police force.”
etcetera ..........

Obama Raises Concerns
Obama Raises Concerns about Police Militarization in Post-Shooting Crackdown
Speaking at the White House, President Obama declined to weigh in on the specifics of the Michael
Brown shooting, citing an ongoing federal investigation. But Obama voiced concerns about the
militarized police response to the protests seen over the past week.
President Obama: "There is a big difference between our military and our local law enforcement,
and we don’t want those lines blurred. That would be contrary to our traditions. And I think that
there will be some bipartisan interest in re-examining some of those programs."

Hedy Epstein
Stop the Violence from Ferguson to Gaza:
90-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Arrested in St. Louis
Wednesday, August 20, 2014
Just days after her 90th birthday, Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein was arrested Monday in St.
Louis when she was part of a protest outside Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s office. Epstein was born in
Germany and left in 1939 on a Kindertransport to England. Her parents died in Auschwitz. Epstein
is a co-founder of the St. Louis Palestine Solidarity Committee and St. Louis branch of Jewish Voice
for Peace.
In 2011, she was part of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla and was a passenger on the U.S.-flagged ship,
The Audacity of Hope. Over the years, she has made many solidarity trips to the West Bank.
Epstein criticizes the police handling of protests in Ferguson. "It’s the same kind of violence that
I’ve observed when I was in the Israeli-occupied Palestine," Epstein says. "I know what it feels like
to be discriminated against, to be oppressed, and I can’t stand idly by when I see there are
problems."
Haar ouders stierven in Auschwitz.
onder U.S.-vlag: The Audacity of Hope.
in Ferguson. "Het is het zelfde soort geweld dat ik heb waargenomen toen ik in het door Israëliers
bezette Palestina was," zegt Epstein. "Ik weet hoe het voelt om te worden gediscrimineerd, te
worden onderdrukt, en ik kan niet werkeloos staan als ik zie dat zich problemen voordoen."

The Other Shooting In St. Louis
The Other Shooting In St. Louis
Aug 21 2014 @ 9:44am
Disturbing footage of Kajieme Powell’s death has emerged:
The newly released video begins before police arrive on the scene. A bystander has followed Powell
after he took energy drinks and muffins from a market without paying for them, and can be heard
chuckling over Powell’s erratic behavior. Powell is seen slowly pacing around the scene of the
eventual shooting before police arrive.
When the officers enter and draw their guns, Powell ignores warnings to put down his knife, and
advances on them. He then repeatedly yells, “Shoot me!”
But Powell does not appear to be holding a knife high, and he looks to be walking normally — and
to be further than two or three feet from the officers — when they open fire, killing him.

...................................

Did the St. Louis police have to shoot Kajieme Powell?
Updated by Ezra Klein on August 20, 2014, 11:13 p.m. ET @ezraklein
Powell looks sick more than he looks dangerous. But the police draw their weapons as soon as
they exit their car. They begin yelling at him to stop. And when they begin shooting, they shoot
to kill — even continuing to shoot when Powell is motionless on the ground. There is no warning
shot, even. It does not seem like it should be so easy to take a life.
