A Grim Portrait of Civilian Deaths in Iraq

This article is one of several being published by The New York Times, based on a trove of secret field reports from the battlegrounds of Iraq. The archive is the second such cache obtained by the independent group WikiLeaks and made available to several news organizations.

The reports in the archive disclosed by WikiLeaks offer an incomplete, yet startlingly graphic portrait of one of the most contentious issues in the Iraq war — how many Iraqi civilians have been killed and by whom.

The reports make it clear that most civilians, by far, were killed by other Iraqis. Two of the worst days of the war came on Aug. 31, 2005, when a stampede on a bridge in Baghdad killed more than 950 people after several earlier attacks panicked a huge crowd, and on Aug. 14, 2007, when truck bombs killed more than 500 people in a rural area near the border with Syria.

The public image of detainees in Iraq was defined by the photographs, now infamous, of American abuse at Abu Ghraib, like the hooded prisoner and the snarling attack dog. While the documents disclosed by WikiLeaks offer few glimpses of what was happening inside American detention facilities, they do contain indelible details of abuse carried out by Iraq’s army and police.

Dubai/Londen, 22 okt. Volgens de klokkenluiderswebsite WikiLeaks zijn bij Amerikaanse controleposten in Irak honderden burgers gedood. Ook hebben de VS geholpen marteling door de Iraakse overheid in de doofpot te stoppen.

Tevens tonen uitgelekte documenten aan dat in Irak van 2003 tot 2009 zo'n 109.000 burgerdoden zijn gevallen. Dit heeft althans de Arabische nieuwszender al-Jazeera vrijdagavond gemeld. WikiLeaks zelf had voor zaterdag belangrijk nieuws aangekondigd.
Al-Jazeera zegt dat het nu al toegang heeft gehad tot nieuwe uitgelekte documenten. Het tv-station wil vanaf 23.00 uur (onze tijd) een uitzending wijden aan de „schokkende nieuwe informatie”.

The UN has called on Barack Obama to order a full investigation of US forces' involvement in human rights abuses in Iraq after a massive leak of military documents that detail torture, summary executions and war crimes.

The Guardian has analysed the 400,000 documents, the biggest leak in US military history, and found 15,000 previously unreported civilian deaths. The logs show how US authorities failed to investigate hundreds of reports of abuse, torture, rape and murder by Iraqi police and soldiers whose conduct appears to be systematic and generally unpunished.
Nowak said that if the files released through WikiLeaks pointed to clear violations of the UN Convention Against Torture the Obama administration had an obligation to investigate them.
The logs paint a disturbing picture of the relationship between US and Iraqi forces. Nowak said that UN human rights agreements obliged states to criminalise every form of torture, whether directly or indirectly, and to investigate any allegations of abuse.

WikiLeaks Founder on the Run, Trailed by Notoriety

Julian Assange moves like a hunted man. In a noisy Ethiopian restaurant in ondon’s rundown Paddington
district, he pitches his voice barely above a whisper to foil the Western intelligence agencies he fears.

He demands that his dwindling number of loyalists use expensive encrypted cellphones and swaps his own as
other men change shirts. He checks into hotels under false names, dyes his hair, sleeps on sofas and
floors, and uses cash instead of credit cards, often borrowed from friends.

“By being determined to be on this path, and not to compromise, I’ve wound up in an extraordinary situation,”
Mr. Assange said over lunch last Sunday, when he arrived sporting a woolen beanie and a wispy stubble and
trailing a youthful entourage that included a filmmaker assigned to document any unpleasant surprises.

Mr. Assange’s own fate seems as imperiled as Private Manning’s. Last Monday, the Swedish
Migration Board said Mr. Assange’s bid for a residence permit had been rejected. His British
visa will expire early next year. When he left the London restaurant at twilight, heading into the
shadows, he declined to say where he was going. The man who has put some of the world’s
most powerful institutions on his watch list was, once more, on the move.

Odd this should come out today. It smacks of a smear piece. The man may not be perfect,
but he is certainly doing a heroic thing.

As of this month, over 5,700 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. That count
does not include those veterans who commit suicide or die from war-related issues after returning
home from military service. Well, a new investigation into California veterans and active service
members reveals that three times as many veterans are dying soon after returning home than
those being killed in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. According to the report published in the Bay
Citizen and the New York Times, more than 1,000 California veterans under 35 died between 2005 and 2008.

Wel hoor je hier ook van veel psychische problemen.

U.S. Plan Offers Path to Ending Afghan Combat
