INAUGURAL GLOBAL SLAVERY INDEX REVEALS
MORE THAN 29 MILLION PEOPLE LIVING IN SLAVERY

This is the first edition of the Global Slavery Index produced by the
Walk Free Foundation and its partners. It is the first Index of its kind –
providing an estimate, country by country, of the number of people
living in modern slavery today.

Over 29 million people are living in conditions of modern slavery today,
the Walk Free Foundation’s inaugural Global Slavery Index has revealed.
The Index, which will be published annually, is the first of its kind and
gives the most accurate and comprehensive measure of the extent and
risk of modern slavery, country by country, currently available.

Sklaverei Millionen Europäer trinken Assam-Tee, aber zu einem erschreckenden Preis: Die
Plantagenarbeiter verdienen so wenig, dass sie ihre Kinder als Sklaven verkaufen müssen
Als der Schlepper vor der Tür ihrer Hütte auf einer Teeplantage im indischen Bundesstaat Assam
stand, war Elaina Kujar gerade aus der Schule zurück. Das Mädchen war 14 und wollte
Krankenschwester werden. Stattdessen wurde sie eine Kindersklavin und verlor vier Jahre ihres Lebens.

Nun sitzt sie wieder in der Hütte, spielt mit ihrem langen dunklen Haar und erzählt, wie ihr Besitzer
sich neben ihr im Wohnzimmer seines Hauses Pornos anschaute, während sie auf dem Boden lag
und schlafen wollte. „Dann vergewaltigte er mich“, sagt sie und schaut auf ihre Hände. Draußen
fällt der Monsunregen aufs Blechdach und schlägt an die mit Lehm verputzten Bambuswände.
Drinnen hat jemand einen Kirchenkalender aufgehängt. Der Herr ist allen gütig, steht darauf.

Elaina wurde nach Delhi verkauft, weil ihre Eltern, die auf einer Plantage im Distrikt Lakhimpur den
weltberühmten Assam-Tee pflücken, so wenig verdienten, dass sie es sich nicht leisten konnten,
das Kind bei sich zu behalten. Es gibt Tausende Mädchen, die wie sie von den Teeplantagen im
Nordosten Indiens von Schleppern in die Hauptstadt gebracht werden, für teils nicht mehr als 50
Euro an einen Vermittler verkauft und von diesem für bis zu 800 Euro an einen Arbeitgeber
weiterverkauft werden. Die Kinder werden als Sklaven gehalten, vergewaltigt, missbraucht. So
sieht Sklavenhandel im 21. Jahrhundert aus. Man geht davon aus, dass allein in Delhi 100.000,
manchmal erst zwölf Jahre alte Mädchen so eingesperrt werden. Andere werden in den Nahen
Osten, einige angeblich sogar bis nach Europa weiterverkauft.
